Simone Bowman

“I became a volunteer at Lambeth Mediation Service because of my existing interest in resolving disputes as a lawyer. I was already trained as a civil and commercial mediator but I wanted to develop my skills from the grass roots in working with my community.

I think LMS is an asset to the local community in Lambeth through valuable contributions made over the years. Our organisation upholds a value and importance that residents can have a go-to organisation of support, helping them to resolve their issues. I am a born Brixtonian and Lambeth is a huge part of my identity and it has shaped me into the person I am today. LMS is part of that foundation, too.

There are huge benefits to being a volunteer mediator. It’s very rewarding when you give up your time and you can see that you’ve helped to resolve a person’s issues, whether completely or partially. It also helps to develop your personal and communication skills, which helped me to grow my confidence in my profession as a lawyer. When you’re dealing with people in your local area and issues that you probably wouldn’t have come across yourself, it helps you develop a different understanding of people, races and different beliefs. If you are about all-embracing and getting to know people, like any volunteering, this is a very rewarding experience. Also, you meet some great people along the way!

If you’re thinking about trying mediation, I would advise you to be open-minded and have a go. If you’re keen and serious about wanting to sort things out, give it a chance because you’ve got nothing to lose.”
